Introducing Classic Fuse, Our New Fusible Woven Interfacing for Bag Making

Updated: Aug 27

Introducing Classic Fuse header

I am so excited to tell you about our brand new product for bag makers: Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing. This is something we have been working on for almost a year with our partners at Therm O Web, and it is finally here!

There are a lot of interfacing options out there. In the past, I always struggled to find one that performed how I wanted it to. Some products were stable but overly stiff. Others had a softer hand, but the method of adhesion was not very effective. That is why we created Classic Fuse. Keep reading or watch the video below to learn more.

What Is Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing?

Classic Fuse by Simply Classic is a high-quality woven cotton interfacing, designed with bag making in mind. An excellent alternative to Pellon® SF101 Shape-Flex®*, Classic Fuse provides support and structure to fabrics commonly used in bag linings. It is fusible, with a thin coat of heat-activated adhesive on the back. It’s also sewable, so it won’t gum up your needles or leave residue.

Our woven interfacing is 100% cotton (excluding the adhesive backing). It is recommended for lightweight fabrics including cotton, cotton canvas, linen, lightweight wool, rayon, and silk. Though it was engineered with bag making in mind, it is also ideal for quilting, garment and costume making, embroidery, and many other creative projects.

What Makes It Different From Other Interfacing?

I have tried so many interfacing products over the years, and I can confidently say that Classic Fuse is different. Here's why.

1. It's soft, strong, and stable without stiffness.

It gives you crisp edges and stability without sacrificing softness. For example, here are two pieces of woven cotton fabric: one that has been interfaced and one that has not.

Below, you can see Classic Fuse compared to two other brands of interfacing. Take a look at the hand of Competitor #2 (on the right). It's quite stiff and won't lie flat on its own. Classic Fuse (left) is lot more flexible, while still being stable enough to provide plenty of support.

2. It has a fully coated adhesive backing, NOT glue dots.

If we look at Competitor #1 in the photo above (center), we can see that the black interfacing is covered in tiny white dots. Those are glue dots. Glue dots are the most common adhesion method for fusible interfacing, but they have some downsides. When you use your iron or heat press with interfacing like this, the glue spreads outwards from the center of the dot — but it doesn’t quite melt evenly. You can end up with inconsistencies like bubbling and gapping, which can look sloppy.

That's why Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing has a fully coated adhesive backing, sometimes called a curtain glue backing. Instead of using glue dots, we have completely coated the back with a super-thin layer of heat-activated adhesive. That allows it to melt evenly and consistently, which gives us a very professional and polished finish.

3. It's 3x wider, with more usable material per yard.

Our woven interfacing comes in three sizes:

  • 2 yards – 59" x 72"

  • 5 yards – 59" x 180"

  • 10 yards – 59" x 360"

You'll notice that all three sizes are 59" wide. Most other woven interfacing is only 15"– 20" wide. That means Classic Fuse is approximately 3x wider than the typical piece of interfacing. When comparing prices, make sure to take the total square yardage into account, not just the length. You will find that Classic Fuse is competitively priced starting at just $10.86 per square yard.

How to Use Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing

Our woven interfacing is easy to use with an iron or a heat press. Simply follow these five steps.

  1. IRON: Pre-heat iron to cotton setting (high heat), NO STEAM. HEAT PRESS: Pre-heat heat press to 300°F, NO STEAM.

  2. Cut Classic Fuse to the shape and size needed for pattern. Cut away seam allowances if needed.

  3. Place the shiny side of Classic Fuse on the wrong side of the fabric (wrong sides together).

  4. IRON: Cover with a Teflon sheet or dry pressing cloth. Press and hold iron with medium pressure for 10–15 seconds. Repeat by lifting iron to a new area and pressing, slightly overlapping previous area until the entire surface is bonded. HEAT PRESS: Cover with a Teflon sheet. Press with medium pressure for 10–15 seconds. Repeat as needed until entire surface is bonded.

  5. Allow pieces to cool, then check the seams for proper adhesion. Iron again if needed. Sew as per pattern instructions.

Keep in mind that heat presses and irons may vary. Some customers have found it easier to adhere the woven interfacing without using a Teflon sheet. We recommend testing a small piece first to determine what works best with your equipment.

What Customers Are Saying

I could go on about this product all day, but why not let our customers do the talking? Here's what Robin T. has to say in her 5-star review of Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing.

Convenient packaging:

"This comes packaged in a soft-fold single sheet ... in a resealable plastic bag so it stays clean when you put it away."

Easy cutting, no shrinkage:

"It cuts so easy and stays true to form. I did not experience any shrinking when fusing to cotton fabric."

Strong adhesion:

"Fused beautifully and stayed in place. I tried to peel it from the fabric, it would pull the threads of the cotton apart before it would let loose ... I highly recommend."

Classic Fuse Woven Interfacing is available in 3, 5, and 10 yard packages. Give it a try and see the difference it makes in your sewing.
